Google’s mobile operating system continues to reign in the third quarter with 84 percent of global shipments, says research firm Strategy Analytics, which also predicts challenges ahead.
Android continued its dominance of the smartphone market last quarter, surpassing Apple’s iOS, according to a report released Friday by Strategy Analytics.
For the third quarter, global shipments of smartphones with the Android operating system reached 268 million versus 206 million in the same quarter a year ago.
Android has 84 percent of the smartphone market, which represents an increase of 81.4 percent over the same period last year.
Strategy Analystics cited the power of Android but said individual challenges for manufacturers of Android devices.
“The leadership of Android in the global market of smartphones seems unattainable at the moment, “said Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, said in a statement. “However, the challenges are growing for Google. The Android platform is becoming saturated with hundreds of hardware brands, and prices of Android smartphones continue to fall globally, and few vendors Android devices are getting profits.”
Still, other operating systems will not tread on the heels or Android. The iOS Apple ended the quarter with 39.3 million shipments smartphones , compared to 33.8 million during the same quarter in 2013. But during the same period, Apple’s market share fell to 12.3 percent of 13.4 percent. Strategy Analytics director Woody Oh Apple blamed the fall due to the limited presence of IOS on low-end devices on the market for smartphones .However, during the third quarter, Apple introduced the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus it will mean an increase in shipments. But new iPhones are high-end devices, an area that continues to be the only move for Apple. This year the company did not introduce a cheaper iPhone equivalent similar to 5C. Android, by contrast, offers more different ranges so you can get more sales the world, especially in emerging markets.
Windows Phone from Microsoft was third with global shipments of 10.5 million, up from 10.3 million over the same period last year. But its market share fell to 3.3 percent from 4.1 percent and “continues to struggle in China and Japan,” according to Strategy Analytics.
Fourth, slipping BlackBerry shipments saw a 2.3 million to 2.5 million, while market share dropped to 0.7 percent from 1 percent. The company faces an uphill battle just to keep what little market share still has hopes that the next BlackBerry BlackBerry Passport and Classic help you.
Among all global shipments grew 27 cell percent last quarter and reached 320 million units, compared to 253 million during the same quarter last year.
