The great lesson of iOS Android 9 – Hypertext

Lately, with each new presentation software from Apple, it’s easy to accuse them that they are copying what already exists for years on Android, webOS, Windows Phone … I am one who believes that Indeed, they are relying on many other functions, as others did with IOS in their first years of life . And I like that there is this symbiotic feedback in both directions. But focusing today in the case of IOS 9 versus the history of Android, wanted to express my opinion on what is a great example of how Apple does things (some).

The fact is that iOS 9 It includes two new functions, a priori, small, but, as the backup or Android permissions M, be very useful and essential in the daily life of many users. That deal updates 2015 the two largest mobile operating systems market. These functions, small but useful are the introduction of back to previous app , -always that has sent us a link to the currently, and content indexing application by API . The latter allows all content that we hosted in an application, such as documents, music, videos or photos is accessible from the search. I understand that applications like Dropbox can even display content that is not downloaded, so that we can best access them.

 Search API

Where is the lesson of iOS in September? “We already had Android”. It is true. The button “Back” on Android, has existed since birth, and since birth is completely broken . Say broken in the sense that their behavior is totally inconsistent depending where we are (system applications, third-party applications, games …). We never know if we will take the previous application, if it is going to take a step back in the application in which we are directly or will close and return to the home screen. In fact, no lack of important voices that suggest how Google could fix function. IOS 8 and earlier, there was a button “Back” standardized, but gestures and optional buttons that returned us to an earlier application .

Top right we see the & quot; Back to Telegram & quot; direct, while Chrome need more steps.

Top right we see the “Back to Telegram” direct, while Chrome need more steps.

The new button takes you to the previous application, regardless of what we have done in today. Case Study: send us a link Hypertext Twitter. We opened in Safari, and sailed for 20 minutes between links. iOS in September continue to show a button on the top that says “Back to Twitter”. And if you press, back to exactly the same point of origin . The tweet from our friend with a link to Hypertext

What in Android? Once let’s Chrome and sailed for 20 minutes, would click the “Back” button and browser would interpret that want to return to the previous link within Chrome, but not Twitter . Even if we open the Twitter app from the home screen, their status is different regarding we left. The difference is remarkable, iOS is a much higher implementation, if we also take into account that still possible to go back as we used to do with slide from the edges of the screen or with dedicated buttons.

Even Google itself does not index or data Drive Keep in your search. iOS in September will.

Second, I will discuss the content indexing . As a student, I handle many PDF files, the content is easily indexed by any system, but not until now by IOS and Android. In the case of Android, the search function is very popular with Google Now, but so far, Google has not shown concern for showing local content, that is, for the data contained in our applications, even for the Drive or Keep . Since the PDF mentioned until we have saved notes in Evernote. The latter makes OCR, so it is very useful to search from Spotlight and the system will lead us to the right note.

In Android there are similar implementations, but only focus on web content. Apple will bet on them. It seems that the power of Google only used the data they collect their services, but not in the application . Now on Tap is bright but does not solve it.

Two new features (not so new) showing that it is better to focus on deepening them not implement without continuity

In conclusion, having used the IOS beta 9 and the developer preview of Android M, I liked alike. Both operating systems come to enrich our everyday experience, but with iOS 9 Google Apple has shown that it is important not to have functions implemented since 2008, but that there are well squeezed , which is not does the search and the “Back” button. IOS 9 come these two functions can already use, and from day one will be open to developers so that all apps make use of them. This does not mean that Apple has not done much wrong as not to bring to iOS eight extensions, but his problem is with deadlines, rather than approach.
