Android 'viste' 79% of phones sold - The Nation Costa Rica

Washington AFP. Almost eight out of ten smartphones sold worldwide in 2013, powered by Google’s Android operating system, according to a survey released this week

The report of the research firm Strategy Analytics confirms the rise of Android, used in 78.9% of smartphones class=”mce”> the world, which has expanded its lead over Apple’s iOS, the platform of the iPhone and other devices.

“There is no doubt that 2013 was the year of Android,” said Neil Mawston, an analyst at Gartner.

“However, the annual growth rate of Android was reduced to 62% in 2013, the lowest level of the output of this platform.”

Mawston also said rivals like Microsoft or Firefox “will be ready to exploit any sign of a significant slowdown of Android this year.”

According to Strategy Analytics, the global market share of Apple fell to 15.5% in 2013 from 19.4% in 2012. Windows Phone, meanwhile, placed third with a share of 3.6% compared to 2.7% in 2012.

“Microsoft is firmly installed as the third major industry ecosystem of smartphones class=”mce”> , with 35.7 million units sold worldwide “Mawston said.

“However, the Windows Phone platform is still struggling to grow in the ranges of low and premium of the smartphones , which remain serious weaknesses that Microsoft will face in 2014, “said the study.
