Google manages to win over Oracle in demand for Android – El Universal

A US jury ruled Thursday that the law allows use Google made software Oracle Corp to build its Android operating system for smart phones, giving the unit Alphabet great victory a protracted dispute over copyright.

the jury endorsed unanimously Google’s position that its use of Java development platform is protected under the provisions of fair use law copyright, which ended a trial in which Oracle sought compensation 9 billion dollars.

Oracle said in a statement after the verdict that will appeal to the decision.

in the second trial resulting demand in the District Court in San Francisco, Oracle said the Android operating system Google violated the copyright of parts of Java , a development platform.

Google, a unit of Alphabet, said he should be able to use Java without paying a fee under the provisions of fair use.

the first trial, conducted in 2012, ended without the jury could reach a verdict.

the case was closely watched by software developers that they feared that a victory for Oracle could unleash a wave of demands on software copyright. However, investors believed that Alphabet faced little risk.

Shares of Oracle and Alphabet were little changed after the verdict was known.

After the first trial, judge William Alsup ruled that the elements of Java under discussion could not enjoy the protection of copyright.

But federal appeals court disagreed with the decision in 2014, ruling that the computer language that connects programs known as applications-programming interface can have such protection.

the US law allows the use limited material without having to purchase a license holder of rights under the provisions of “fair use” for purposes such as research.
