Android is susceptible to theft fingerprints: study – CNET in Spanish

Jason Cipriani / CNET

Researchers at security company FireEye found that there is a way to steal fingerprint information of users stored on Android devices.

The research was conducted by Tao Wei Zhang Yulong, who will present their full results next Wednesday during computer security conference Black Hat, Calif.

This vulnerability affects all Android devices support fingerprint reader. Companies like Samsung, HTC, Huawei, among others, already have phones with this capability. While the number of phones with biometric reader is not so high, by 2019 it is expected that at least half of globally distributed phones include the reader, and the threat will become more worrisome.

Zhang confirmed through an email sent to ZDNet (sister site CNET) who managed to collect fingerprint information on a HTC One Max and Samsung Galaxy S5. Zhang said that the attacks obtained images of fingerprints taking advantage of the phone is not completely save the information.

The researcher pointed out that once the hacking obtains information from fingerprints users, it is very easy to use for any purpose – something extremely dangerous. Fingerprints on mobile devices are used to authorize bank payments or enter private information applications such as Dropbox.

On the other side of the coin, Zhang said Apple has done a good job with their biometric sensor Touch ID, because the information is strongly fingerprints filed under encryption. Even if the hacking could access the information, it could not be read by encrypted.
