One handicaps Android versus iOS is the fragmentation system . Refers to the large number of different versions installed on more than one million Android devices out there in the world.

According to statistics provided by Google itself, which come to us through Android Police , there are currently active six versions of Android after Android 2.2 . The above are not counted:

Android Fragmentation January 2014

As we can see in the graph, version Android is most commonly used Jelly Bean covering Android 4.1 to Android 4.3. It is installed on the 59.1% for all devices using Android (smartphones, tablets, Smart TV, etc). The most popular version Android 4.1 , present in 35.9% of all devices.

old Android 2.3 Ginger Bread is still used in the 21.2% of the whole platform of Google. Android 4.0 .

The latest blazing

system version, Android 4.4 KitKat , and spent nearly three months on the market, released the Nexus 5, but in all this time has just arrived at 1.4% of all Android devices.

In contrast, iOS 7 is more than 90% of all Apple hardware .

compare both platforms is absurd, they are two completely different situations. iOS only runs on hardware from a single manufacturer , who is also the creator of the operating system. All Apple devices are powerful, so they can accept the new system smoothly.

Android has hundreds of different manufacturers and the Android platform is very heterogenous, it ranges from simple terminals to powerful smartphones, TVs, tablets ultrabaratas , wearable gadgets, etc.. devices are very low power, which can not be updated .

In others, the standard “ 18 months ” is true: if a smartphone has more than eighteen months, and is not massively popular, the manufacturer no longer updated

therefore are not comparable platforms, but it is true that Android fragmentation is a problem because it makes them harder to apps create and more likely to have bugs, having to schedule them for different versions.

And although Google and manufacturers promised that the time of adoption of the new versions would be shortened, 1.4% of the Android 4.4 KitKat shows that it is not .

is a topic that must work hard in the new versions of Android.
