9 of every 10 smartphones use Android – Digital Trends English (blog)

The iPhone may be iconic, but when it comes to reign globally, Android is still the leader.

According to a new report from Strategy Analytics, Android now accounts for 87.5% of the global market share of smart phones in the third quarter of 2016, crushing Apple’s iOS in the race to become the main operating system in the mobile space.

In fact, the use of iOS would have decreased in the last three months, according to the results of Apple, with another quarter of falling sales of the iPhone.

According to this recent report, nearly 9 out of every 10 smartphones around the world run the operating system from Google, with 328,6 million Android devices registered in the last quarter. This figure represents an increase of 10.3% compared to the previous year, while the system of Apple has registered a fall of 5.2%, to 45.5 million devices.

of course, Apple is the only other major player in this space (compared to others such as Blackberry, Microsoft, Tizen from Samsung, which have a combined market share of only 0.3%).

Even so, Apple seems to be on the wane and its iOS system represents the 12.1% of the market, in the third quarter, that is, 1.5% less than last year. That said, it is still too early to say whether Android will continue to be as powerful as it is today.

as the experts point out, a large part of the popularity of Android is due to its representation in markets such as China and India.

Woody Oh, director at Strategy Analytics, points out that "the leadership of Android in the global market of smart phones seems untouchable at this point. Their services are low cost and their easy to use software remain the main attractions for the hardware manufacturers, operators and consumers all over the world ".

however, Oh notes that "there are still a number of challenges for Google. The Android platform is filling up with hundreds of manufacturers, few manufacturers of Android devices, take the profits and the new range Pixel Google is attacking its own hardware partners that made it popular to Android in the first place. " So we need to be attentive because there could be more changes in the near future.
