Many Android phones are more durable than iPhones, but that doesn’t mean they are immune to damage. The screen of the phone are glass, and it happens that the glass breaks when it falls to the ground.

So if your Android phone you drop it for the umpteenth time and now the glass of the screen looks like a spider web, if you don’t have insurance, these are your options to fix it, or put up with.

Calling the manufacturer

If your Android device is relatively new (if it is still under warranty), the first place where you should search for a solution is the manufacturer. The price of replacing the screen varies depending on the device, but for a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, is likely to be about US$ 270, plus a couple of days without a phone. Go to the manufacturer is almost always more expensive than an independent garage, but so you keep the warranty intact and your phone will be perfectly repaired (it is possible to get it replaced by a model reconstructed), and in the case of equipment to test water, such as the Galaxy S7 Edge, keep that feature.

owners of Samsung phones probably need to buy the secure Samsung Protection Plus, which is like Apple Care but for your phone Galaxy. Samsung Protection Plus is an extended warranty available for all the Samsung phones of high range and covers everything from mechanical problems to damage caused by accident (such as broken screens). The plan costs between US$ 99 and US$ 129 for two years, during which time you are entitled to two claims for damages by accident, with a deductible of US$ 79 per incident. So that the replacement of the damaged screen of the Galaxy S7 Edge will cost you $ 208.

If you have a Google Pixel, Google has partnered with the chain independent of repairs uBreakiFix, which will repair the screen for the price relatively inexpensive$ 129 in the case of the Pixel, and US$ 149 in the Pixel XL. uBreakiFix has workshops in the united States, Canada, and Trinidad and Tobago, and in addition to being able to take your device damaged the workshops, you can send it by mail (with free shipping). Like Samsung and Apple, Google offers a safe called a Device Protection Plan for the Pixel and the Pixel XL. This plan costs US$ 99 for two years of coverage and includes two incidents of accidental damage (but you have to pay a deductible for each one,$ 79 per Pixel, and$ 99 for the Pixel XL). In other words, the broken screen of a Pixel will cost$ 178, while the Pixel XL comes out at US$ 198.

If you have an HTC 10 — and you bought it in HTC.com between the 29th of April 2016 and April 29, 2017 — the phone is eligible for the Uh Oh Protection Plan of HTC, which repairs or replaces your HTC 10 once (in the first 12 months of having the device if the screen is broken, or if damage by water or moisture, extreme heat or extreme environmental conditions such as corrosion and oxidation. HTC sends you a device replacement before you send them your device damaged (a business day), but you have to accept a temporary charge of US$ 599 on a credit card until HTC receives your phone.

fix it in a workshop independent

If your Android device already has no warranty or is a less popular model, probably you will save money if you go to a repair shop independent. I called several workshops in Los Angeles and they gave me quotes of between US$ 100 and US$ 250 to replace the screen of a Samsung Galaxy S5.

Use a independent garage has a couple of benefits, in addition to the price. First, the service is fast (in some cases less than an hour; a workshop even offered me to come to my apartment and put my phone in my own home), which means that you will not be a long time incommunicado. Most of these workshops offers a warranty on the parts they replace, which also means that you can call them if the screen repaired stops working for any reason, except, of course, if you drop it again.

Some also offer a price slightly less to repair the broken glass (unlike the cases of glass broken and LCD damaged. For example, uBreakiFix charge US$ 180 to repair the glass of an LG G5, and$ 200 to repair the glass and LCD the same phone.

But all workshops are not created equal, so this is what you must ask before you give them your phone number:

  • how much does it cost?
  • how Long does it take?
  • What type of warranty do you offer? (What parts and service or parts or service only? What the warranty is a limited warranty for life?)

Use an independent garage to repair the broken screen of your phone almost always voids the warranty of the manufacturer, so if your device is new, it is best that you ask first a quote from the manufacturer. Some new phones, like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, are very difficult to repair, so probably the manufacturer to offer you a better price than any independent garage service.

Aguántate

Assuming that the broken screen of your phone does not affect much your ability to use it, or make you bleed your fingers, perhaps it is better that you continue with the device until you buy a new one (or until you bleed your fingers). For the device to last as long as possible, with cracks and all, I suggest that you put a cover sturdy shock-proof, because any fall or blow may cause more damage. If the crack on the screen is in the center, it may be desirable to use a screen protector, so you don’t cut your fingers, and protect the screen from further damage.
