Time to change your Android or you bought your first smartphone with this operating system? In the following paragraphs, a guide to getting started with the right foot. In the end, courtesy of my friend Alex Smith (@ alex_herrero), an advanced configuration section for those who want to go beyond the restrictions imposed by manufacturers and mobile carriers.

    1. Load it up at least 50%

lithium ion batteries are not very sensitive, but hate the heat, so it is not necessary, as in the past, loading new devices to maximum for 14,000 hours to be sure that these batteries operate well during its lifetime. Just do not like him get very close to the total discharge, so batteries should carry new phone or tablet to at least 50 percent. Furthermore, it is a classic that during the first days of use the device much more demand when the novelty is over, so going to need much stack, as they say. I know how eager you are to try the new phone, but if you are in 50% or more, you’ll have to wait. If do you use the charger (not USB computer) will go faster in most cases. If your peace of mind enough to take it to 80 or 100%, the better.

    2. Android Update

Now, why let it idle while accumulating energy? The process of updating the operating system should be done while the computer is charging, to avoid the catastrophe happen to run out of batteries while in this delicate transition. So, first, connect it to Wi-Fi and then fijate Settings> About phone> Software Update (or equivalent) and if a new version of Android for the equipment. If there is, is a good time to put the team up. (Where I say settings in your phone could say Settings , is the same. S4 Galaxy In Settings have multiple tabs, not a long list, as in most the other Android.)

    3. Register your account

Once finished loading and Android update, it’s time to start setting. To install apps from Google Play’ll have to register a Gmail account (strictly speaking, of Google). With that addition, be synchronized Contacts (more on this below). To start, I added a Gmail account (the one with most of your contacts or the phone you used above) in Settings> Accounts & sync.

    4. Setting up synchronization

But it’s not just email, you’ll see. Add a touch to the Gmail account that appears in Settings> Accounts & sync> Google . You will see a long list of items. Having tick boxes will be automatically sync. For example, in my case, the Calendar and Contacts are labeled. That way, if I add a quote from one of my PCs, in seconds is visible on the phone (provided there is an Internet connection, of course), and vice versa. With Contacts is the same. Those who had previously on the phone and had been synchronized with the cloud-moved to the new hereby.

is where always disable Instant Upload that makes all the photos with the smartphone serves ending up in Google+. Yes, it is enabled by default.

    5. Putting a password

Okay, contacts and mails are synchronized. Ergo, there are already sensitive information on your computer. Time to put a password. That andd Settings> Lock screen> Choose lock screen and choose one of the methods offered by Android, namely face recognition, Pattern, PIN or Password. Pros and cons?

face recognition is doing very well and is the most comfortable of all but consumes more battery power than others (using the camera and computing power) and, of course, does not walk in darkness.

Pattern (draw a line joining points) is unsafe, although visible tracing can be disabled in the new Androids, remains easy to spy when do you use in public.

PIN is my favorite, because it is less obvious and written faster, giving less chances to prying eyes.

Password, if robust, is the safest method, but it takes more time writing and therefore ends up being very uncomfortable. Still, not a bad idea, if it is a robust key.

    6. Download and install an antivirus

Now that we can access Google Play is time to put an antivirus. There are several good and free in-store, as Avast! and AVG . My favorite is, however, Lookout . This app integrates a number of features that go beyond simple check antivirus. For example, to locate the equipment-GPS, Wi-Fi and 3G, and blow the whistle to, say, find it under a pile of papers. Also, if someone enters the wrong password three times, the phone takes a picture at the intruder and you mail it surreptitiously. It works great and both features are in the free version.

    7. Encrypt?

We still have a security related issue. If the phone contains truly sensitive information, it’s no bad idea to encrypt its contents. For most of us, the PIN to unlock the screen reaches. But this method does not encrypt the data inside the phone. For that we must go to Settings> Security> Encrypt the device?

reiterate, in most cases you do not need to perform this procedure, but if your phone you have the plans for a nuclear fusion technology that will revolutionize life on the planet, my best advice is to encriptes. Some observations, however.

First, some equipment suppliers offer only encrypt the phone’s internal memory, not the SD card.

Second, once encryption starts, no turning back, the only way to undo it is to restart the computer to factory condition, which erases all your data (http://support.google.com/android / bin / answer.py? hl = en & answer = 1663755).

Third, an encrypted telephone uses more computation power, and therefore more battery. This should not, however, be a factor in the team’s autonomy or performance, except that it is a rather old machine.

And one more thing: if the team numbers and you forget the password, bye. Attention that.

    8. Change Launcher

Well, now the fun begins, ie customize the computer. My first step is to replace the Launcher that came with the computer (ie the user interface). If you agree with what the manufacturer offers, you can skip this step. If not, have a look at Nova Launcher . It’s free, fast, and allows you to put multiple pages in the dock (the tape with applications that are at the base of the screen), which is very useful for me. Of course, there are other good Launchers in the app store. If neither convince you, you can always return to the original factory smoothly.

    9. Putting active screens (but not many)

One of the best things about Android is that the screens can display active information. There are widgets with the weather and the forecast, the meeting agenda, the value of stocks, the music player and various other things. Now, the temptation to clutter up your computer with active widgets is great, but there is a hidden cost: Each widget consumes power, and some do with voracious appetite. I managed a good balance leaving only the weather ( Android Weather ), the appointment schedule ( Simple Calendar Widget ) and the music player ( Jukefox ). The securities app (Android Stock Tape Widget ), an indicator I look often because it is a barometer of what is happening in the industry, severely reduced the autonomy of my phone.

    10. Everything under control

While some computers come with a widget to control hardware functions, others do require some kind of maneuver to turn 3G, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Volume and Airplane Mode, among others. I served. In the home screen an app I have always like Powerful Control . In comes the equally practical Samsung Save Energy . Another option, if your daily activities are not too many contingencies, is to use the unique Llama Location Profiles to enable and disable functions, depending on where you are.

    11. Wallpapers

Fun-da-mental put wallpapers that we like, both in the lock screen ( Settings> Settings> Lock screen> Wallpaper ) and in the Launcher ( Settings> Screen> Wallpaper ). You can choose between coming (sometimes are decent), your own photos or files on your computer, so that you can select.

Another thing: if your Android allows you to put additional information on the lock screen is not a bad idea to put your email there. If you lose the phone are much more likely to find him a good person than a thief. Either we are in real trouble.

Yes, I know what you’re thinking. Are not we going to put a animated wallpaper? My experience with this feature of Android is pretty bad (with two exceptions, in honor of suspense, I will say at the end of this paragraph). Why bad? First, because the animated wallpapers are between ugly and very ugly. Second, because almost always hamper that matters, ie what is in the foreground. Third, and this is the most serious, because it consumes battery like there’s no tomorrow. And fourth, because usually ask permission abusive. I’ve tried dozens, and always fall into one or more of these faults. Well, not always.

If you want an attractive background, more or less subtle, that special permits requested and consumes little battery, try A Liquid Cloud (no free version). Then there is another with these features, but only suitable for stout stomachs or knowledgeable biologists: swampwater , which shows (and way too realistic) microscopic bugs that live in a drop of water.

    12. Browser

Yes, although we will use specific apps to online services (Facebook, Gmail, Instagram, Maps, Twitter), install the browser that you like is one of the first configuration tasks. Apart from that could work faster than the factory next most important thing is that you can synchronize bookmarks with which you have installed on your computer. My favorite is still Firefox .

    13. Monitor CPU

Now we get into the details. The phone already has the look and basic functions we want. One of the first applications to add is a monitor microprocessor activity of the device. Believe it and you say, for convenience, phone or smartphone , these teams are like miniature notebooks. In fact suffice to connect a Bluetooth keyboard to a tablet to function as a laptop. So keep an eye on what the CPU is not a bad idea. If suddenly the electronic brain gets to work intensely for a long time, then something weird is going on, or if it is a regular app, then it will soon leave without battery and should uninstall. One of the best monitors CPU also works with multi-core computers, is Usage Timelines Free . Besides the indicator in the notification bar, which is itself sufficiently explicit, shows a history even more useful to display the notification area, and a summary of the RAM usage of each app and system services.

    14. Battery Monitor

same applies to the battery. In the newer Androids can generally activate the indicator percentage of the remainder of autonomy. If not, you may want to install an app like Battery Widget . There are a few, in fact, there are also energy saving programs, as Du Battery Saver . I believe, however, that intelligent planning can extend far autonomy without any additional app.

    15. Putting an expansion card

Unless your phone comes with 32 or more GB of internal memory, if you want to upload music and take pictures and videos without worrying too much, my best advice is to buy extra memory card. Before investing mirá in the manual or on the manufacturer’s site what the limit is supported by your device. If 32 GB can not be put a 64GB card, for example.

    Expert Mode = ON

Warning important : Some procedures described below can disable your phone (beyond repair) and less serious but equally I must warn, violate the warranty. So what follows is at your own risk of the reader.

Indeed, as I passed, I asked him to Alex Smith, who, I know, change your phone like 4 times a year and also configures an enviable level of detail on the steps to choose and start with a new smartphone in what we might call Expert Mode .

    Here you go:

    Words, words, words

basic glossary to not get lost in the jargon (which is cruel and is a lot) can be seen here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Glossary

will be necessary, incidentally, to understand what follows.

    Before choosing

    phone

    1. Verify that the bootloader is opened or to be opened easily (requires Google search, read, research).

    2. Verify that you can rootear .

    3. Verify that there recoveries available (CyanogenMod or TWRP ).

    4. Check you have warranty on the country where we will be more time.

    After unboxing

    1. Put to charge the battery, preferably, until she is at least 80 percent.

    2. Open bootloader .

    3. Flash recovery (TWRP recommend currently in www.teamw.in/project/twrp2).

    4. Nandroid backup (is a complete backup of all partitions of the phone, so it’s good to do it now, it is still intact).

    5. Rooting (and put the commands your application to handle the permits, highly recommended SuperSU, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu).

    6. Set Wi-Fi.

    7. Upgrade to the latest version of Android Stock, if that’s what we like. If not directly seek the ROM (Cyanogen , AOKP, MIUI ) or the mods you want and flash them were satisfied.

    8. Prove credentials Google account.

    9. Download Titanium Backup .

    10. Copy previous backup via USB Titanium to SD or internal memory.

    11. Retrieve the backup.

    12. Enjoy the new gimmick ;)

9. Putting active screens (but not many)

Besides the indicator in the notification bar, which is itself sufficiently explicit, shows a history even more useful to display the notification area, and a summary of the RAM usage of each app and system services.

same applies to the battery.

    12. Enjoy the new gimmick ;)

    the stirrup: my apps (today)

Here is the list of most of the apps that I have installed on my Android now. This changes often trying things because I live, these are more or less stable and can serve as an initial guide. Exclude about a dozen that have not sufficiently examined.

If you want to recommend apps in the comments, will, of course, welcome.
