How and why you should encrypt your Android device – Hypertext

Ten years ago we would not have imagined that today figuring a computer in your pocket everywhere. Your smartphone, your tablet, your portable devices contain a wealth of personal information : your contacts and all your data, your emails and messages, your photos, your social networking accounts. All applications you are full of details about your personal life and the lives of your friends, and the robbery or theft of mobile phones is one of the most common misdemeanors worldwide. However, many people (said to be about a third of all users) not only have their mobile encrypted, but not even protect them with a password.

If your device falls into the hands of someone undesirable, encrypt its contents to swim an additional level of security that could make the difference between a minor inconvenience and having to get a new computer, or being a victim of identity theft or mass a kidnapping or worse. Although activate a password or PIN lock can prevent anyone from using it, it is not difficult to obtain all the data that exists on your disk simply connecting it to a computer via the USB port. Encryption, on the other hand, can protect you from this, so that even if someone has physical access to the device and can circumvent the lock screen, the data obtained will be useless because not have the key.

As in all scenarios where we make decisions about our privacy, at the end of the day is a balance between comfort and safety: Android enabled encryption requires an encryption password is introduced each time we turn on the phone, and requires activation of a lock password or PIN to be entered every time we use the phone.

The full disk encryption means that all space storage will be encrypted, that is, all your data will be mixed by an algorithm that prevents them to be put in order and understood without entering the password. All Android versions from Gingerbread 2.3.4 allow you to enable full disk encryption, and some thrown from Lollipop devices come with factory-enabled encryption.

To enable full disk encryption first you must make sure you have a password or PIN lock screen because Android does not allow you to encrypt your device unless you have a PIN or password. For this, open the setup screen, select Screen lock (Screen lock), and activates a PIN or password. This will be your encryption password, so we recommend choose a good password .

Once done this step, you can now encrypt your device. Open Settings , select Security , and select Encrypt phone (Encrypt Encrypt phone or tablet) in the Encryption ( Encryption). an information box appears with warnings about the process, and you must click Encrypt again to continue. This is the time to connect to the socket, if you have not previously done.

At this point, the wizard will prompt you to enter the PIN or password to continue with the process. Once you do this, and choose “OK”, it’s time to leave your phone alone. The process can take between fifteen minutes and one hour, and you should not interrupt you while you are carrying out . The system will reset itself several times during the process, and see a progress bar on the screen. Once it is completed, it will restart again and must enter the password or PIN for you to complete the startup process.

Depending on your device, enable full disk encryption may have a impact on their performance, making it slow, especially in older computers. Furthermore, encryption is only possible in a sense, that is, you can not regain the disk without encryption unless you do a factory reset, erasing all data. However, once you make the decision to do it, you can and forget about the personal data contained in your phone: you are safe and secure from identity thieves and security agencies overzealous LikeTweet
